Introduction
The first version of this unique seminar was first presented by Construction Research Education and Training Enterprises (CREATE) in Port Elizabeth on 3 December 2009. It evolved from the half-day South African Institute of Architectural Technologists (SAIAT) Construction Health and Safety Seminar presented on 17 May 2008 at SAIAT’s AGM in Port Elizabeth. More recently, an updated version was presented under the auspices of ACHASM in Bloemfontein on 13 March 2018, Port Elizabeth on 20 August, and East London on 21 August. It will be staged in Midrand in September, and other cities in October 2018.
Two of fifteen specific outcomes include an increased ability to: understand and appreciate the importance of a multi-stakeholder approach to construction H&S, and understand and appreciate the importance of addressing construction H&S during the design, planning, and documentation stages of a project.
The seminar will be of relevance to architects, Construction H&S Agents / Managers / Officers, construction managers, contractors, engineers, inspectors, interior designers, project managers, quantity surveyors, and all interested construction role players.

SUMMIT THEME
The summit theme ‘The Role of Procurement and SCM in Construction H&S’ focuses on issues and processes related to appointing and managing stakeholders in terms of H&S. This focus will include the interface between clients, construction project managers, construction H&S agents, designers, quantity surveyors, contractors (construction managers), subcontractors (construction managers), and suppliers, including construction H&S managers and officers, and other stakeholders. The theme was identified due to the role of procurement and SCM in H&S, the issues that arise, and mention of the supply chain relative to ‘accidents’, and collapses in the media.
OBJECTIVES
Upon the 11th anniversary of the Association of Construction Health & Safety Management (ACHASM), the 7th annual event will take the form of a summit, which will provide a forum for construction industry stakeholders to address construction H&S related matters with emphasis on procurement and SCM in construction H&S. The summit will be commercial in nature and aims to stimulate interaction between all the stakeholders active in the industry.
The Department of Labour’s Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Directorate within the Inspection and Enforcement Services Branch will be hosting a workshop on 22 June 2018 at Lethabo Power Station (Vereeniging). The purpose of the workshop is to provide interpretation and guidance on the Lift, Escalator and Passenger Conveyor Regulations. The workshop will be running under the theme “How safe is the transportation of people and goods within South African buildings”. These regulations apply to any person who has permanent lifts, escalator or passenger conveyor on his or her premises or any person who carries out work on lifts, escalators or passenger conveyors.
As the registration of ex-mineworkers for unclaimed benefits by the Department of Labour and its entity, the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), gains momentum in the Northern Cape Province, the Department has received reports that there are people operating in the Province targeting ex-mineworkers with a promise of assisting them with their claims for a fee.
“As the Department of Labour we would like to warn our people against these suspicious criminal act and we urge them to wait for the campaign to be publicised and reach their towns and respective areas, We have no relationship with any forum or agent purporting to act as middlemen for application intended for unclaimed benefits. We distance ourselves from such acts and urge our people to report those people at their nearest Police”, said Acting Chief Director: Provincial Operations, Ms Emily Maneli.

Furthermore, there is a need in South Africa for holistically educated clients, project managers, architects, engineers, interior designers, landscape architects, quantity surveyors, construction managers, and construction H&S consultants. 2017 is the tenth anniversary of ACHASM, and the first ACHASM symposium / summit was staged in 2011. The objective of the summit is to provide a forum for construction industry role players to address construction H&S related matters with specific emphasis on topical issues, the development of knowledge and skills areas / competency, and professionalism. The summit will be of relevance to architects, construction H&S agents / managers / officers, construction project managers, engineers, inspectors, interior designers, quantity surveyors, and all interested construction role players.
